History of Editing

My Edit Story - The Begging

The art of 'Film Editing' is part of the process of film making. The term itself came from the original process of physically cutting film but today it is done digitally in the computer.

In the late 19th century, films were originally short and one locked off shot. Even though film makers in those early days were reluctant to edit shots since they thought editing scenes would confuse their audiences, the process of editing started to become popular in helping to develop story telling in films. Film makers wanted to make their stories longer so editing became necessary because film camera magazines could only hold a certain amount of film.

Film makers also realised that the concept of editing in other mediums was not a new principle. In the theatre scene changes have been used since the beginning around 2,500 years ago and flashbacks and scene changes have a similar history in novels.

Film editing evolved into the art assembling shots into coherent sequences as well as for connecting or deleting scenes. When films are not working or the film is a disaster, rewrites and re-edits can save the day and the film maker since their last project can influence the funding for their next film.
